Congratulations Richard.

The Moderators will have to devise a new sort of member for you. "Junior member, hero member, MBE member"

P.S. You hinted recently that there would be more news soon on passenger numbers on the branches. Is this available yet?

Sincere congratulations indeed on a well-deserved honour and long live the Devon & Cornwall branch line revival!

Many thanks Gents.   This has been some year for me, the Partnership and the branch lines and this award is a really lovely way to cap it.

I can give you an update on journey figures, John.  I got the figures up to 12 Dec in on Christmas Eve.

With one full period left to go, more than 1.5 million journeys have been made on the six rural branch lines we focus on so far in 2009, up 19% on last year and 65.2% on 2004.  Top performer, percentage wise, is the Newquay Line - up 54.3% this year (an extra 23,306 journeys, remember too these are just the DMU services) - top performer, numbers wise, is the Maritime Line (Falmouth) with an extra 84,675 journeys (up 30.9%).

All the lines are well up though - Tarka 11.8%, Tamar Valley 12%, Looe Valley 18.3%, St Ives Bay 15.4% and almost 500,000 journeys just on its own.  The thing now will be to do everything we can, with FGW and all the Partners, to maintain and increase these numbers further in 2010.  A really lovely Summer would be a huge help!

Happy New Year everyone.

May I also add my congratulations on your well-deserved honour

Question on the figures (bearing in mind the one full period to go) - could you possibly break them down to give an indication of the seasonal split?

Wow, that's an impressive increase!

Congratulations Richard for all your work and the MBE and well done to all members of the partnerships for the numbers!

Dear Richard,

From myself (and I'm sure my former colleagues at International Railway Journal in Falmouth), hearty congratulations - I was so pleased when I heard about your award, and it's wonderful you've received official recognition for all you've done over the years.

I'm sure there's a great deal more to come - but thank you ever so much for all your efforts for passengers across Devon and Cornwall: long may you feel motivated enough to continue!

Very best wishes,

Andy Roden

Those figures make wonderful reading and bear witness to the efforts of the partnership and the various friends groups, notably Focal. Also to FGW, who will hopefully draw inspiration from this success to improve other services, the Trans-Wilts for example.

From the North Devon Gazette:

New Year MBE for Tarka Line stalwart

New Year honour: Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership manager Richard Burningham has been awarded an MBE.

A rail enthusiast celebrating a 25-year involvement with the Tarka Line train service has been awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List.

Richard Burningham's long association with the Barnstaple to Exeter line began with an eighteen month spell as British Rail's Travel Centre Manager at Barnstaple station in the mid 1980s.

As manager of the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership since 1998, he has worked to promote the service, which has seen a 92 per cent increase in passenger numbers since 2001, a greater passenger growth than any other route in the West of England.

More than 360,000 journeys were made on the line in 2009, a 12 per cent increase on the previous year.

Mr Burningham said he was "touched and humbled" to receive the award in what had been a "bumper year" for the non-profit rail partnership, which focuses on six branch lines in Devon and Cornwall.

"This is a massive honour for the partnership as a whole and caps what has been an excellent year, with the best ever train service on the branch lines and a big increase in passenger numbers. More than 1.5 million journeys were made on the six branch lines in the two counties, up 19 per cent on 2008 and almost two-thirds more than five years ago. The highlight this year has been the best ever service on the Tarka Line, made possible only through financial support from Devon County Council. It's been a fabulous improvement that only goes to justify further improvements including more rolling stock and extra trains."

The rail partnership worked with other rail user groups, local councils and train operators to help launch an hourly service on the Tarka Line in December 2008.

Other work on the line has included running the Tarka Line Forum; publicity initiatives such as the Tarka Line Rail Ale Trail; and support for local community groups including the Tarka Rail Association and the Friends of Crediton Station.

This year, the partnership has worked with Craig Bulley, Barnstaple's Town Centre Manager, to mount a large-scale promotion of shopping trips to Barnstaple by train in South and East Devon under the banner "Barnstaple, best by train".

It has also helped the Tarka Rail Association with its award-winning Tarka Line Walks booklet, both with funding and distributing the guide, as well as a recent reprint of the booklet.

Mr Burningham, who was last month given a National Community Rail "Special Recognition" Award, said the achievements would not have been possible without the "stalwart support" of the partners and local county councils.

He said: "These three are among the most proactive councils in the country for working to make the very most of their rail network, not just through their support of the partnership but also the many schemes they have worked up directly with the rail industry.

"I would also like to say a big thank you to First Great Western. This year's improved timetables are in very large part down to them and they have consistently been extremely supportive of the partnership."

In Richard's own words, shared in public on Facebook:

And there we have it - the end of a long career.   I had a lovely send off last Friday in Looe, organised by my long time deputy (and successor) Rebecca Catterall and also attended by the Partnership's two Chairs to date, David Pinder and current Chair Jon Shaw, the rest of the Team, the Partners and many others I have worked with over the years.

Thanks too to everyone who donated and left a message for my leaving gift.  Very much appreciated.
Good luck to Rebecca as she takes the Partnership forward.   Mike and Betsy too.

I strongly commend members to read Richard's full career story at https://dcrp.org.uk/long-time-devon-cornwall-branch-line-stalwart-retires/. Although the writeup majors on his achievements in the South West, Richard has been a positive worker, inspiration, and influencer far, far wider than in just those two counties.  Richard - enjoy your retirement; I hope (and suspect) that we'll still see you around as your love for what you've been doing has shone through.  A good chance - and with a personal tinge from me - to say "Thank you".

Richard is a valued member and authoritative contributor to well-informed discussions on the Coffee Shop forum: I have moved and merged here a previous topic.

Thank you, Richard, with my very best wishes for your long and happy retirement.

It was a pleasure working as a volunteer with Richard leading during the opening week of the Penryn loop and the expansion of the Falmouth line services that resulted from it's opening. (quite how he trusted me with the Hornby set I really can't imagine). Do enjoy your retirement Richard.
