Appreciate the technical people

This campaign tip (no. 110) was published on Saturday, 20th April 2019
The visible face of your campaign will be the articulate, the bold, the persuasive, the quick analyser of dynamic situation. But that visible face requires the supporting body behind it - the technical expertise that turns it from a briefly flying kite into a solid case that will help transport you from where you start to where you wish to end, even after the wind of change has blown past.

I can't state strongly enough the massive technical backup that's been available to the public transport work I've being doing for the past decade. Without such background knowledge, we would only have flimsy cases. But rather, we need
* An explanation of history - why things are as they are
* An analysis of the possible - what could be done; operationally possible, public acceptable, affordable
* A note of the elephants in the room
* Special note of whom might be negatively effected
* Someone who'll challenge the visible face and direction to ensure it remains robust

You'll find elsewhere (another day, another tip) talking about motivating / rewarding other members of the team you're campaigning on. And that applies 110% to your technical members. For some, a public statement of your appreciation will be the right way to go ... others would shudder at that for various reasons such as - but not limited to - their own personality.

These pages are written by Graham Ellis of Melksham, Wiltshire. Overlapping a life in IT and IT training, with running a hotel and campaigning for improved public transport, Graham has never been quiet - though he's starting to wind down gently now. He no longer takes overnight guests and has stepped doen from the "Community Rail Officer" role which he accidentally aquired. So he now has more time to write pages such as these and to travel in the UK. He'll be delighted to speak with your group or take a look through your case or camapaign, but be alerted that his time is not limitless even now, and he still has to keep the wolf from the door.

What a difference a campaign makes!

It probably wouldn't have happened without a strong community campaign with which I have been involved. Most days through 2019 I'll be sharing a thought, an idea, a way of working or an experience.
